After years of skinny spray-on jeans, tight t-shirts, skyscraper shoes and super-short body-con dresses, its apparent that there has been quite a turnaround for summer fashion this year. Long and loose, has replaced short and sexy, demure has taken a stand on the dolly bird. For women around the world this is a welcome change, I expect men on the other hand not feel as happy about hemlines dropping and cleavages being covered-up.
Today’s summer fashions include ballet flats, floaty palazzo pants and other wide-legged trousers, buttoned-up shirts, midi skirts, and best of all, billowing blouses that allow women to breathe a sigh of relief after having to keep it all sucked in for the past decade. Even Victoria Beckham, godmother of the tight trend, has loosened her belt and opted for baggy tees during her pregnancy.
And this year’s revamped summer fashion trends are having a positive effect on high street retailers. Zara, Cos, Whistles and Gap have all upped their profits thanks to savvy shoppers reconnecting with their femininity without compromise to dignity and a great cut. At the top end of fashion, Marc Jacobs is at the forefront with midi skirts and structured flares that have added a new dimension to power dressing. Summer fashion shows followed the trend with Chloe’s ballet pumps and Stella McCartney’s knee-length denim skirts. Even Dolce and Gabanna toned down the ’sexy’ with their collection of pure white, below-the-knee embroidered dresses.
But the understated summer fashion look needn’t be dull and dowdy. Check out Alexa Cheung, the UK’s Gonzo princess of indie rock, who has been lauded for her unpretentious style. Not one to flash the flesh, Alexa’s demure, modern look – straight button up shirts and knee-length skirts over tights – exemplifies her chic, understated cool.
So is this the end of the Asos generation of body-con celebrity wannabes? Well industry experts say that for summer fashion in 2011, this trend of sucking it in, yanking it on and being sausaged for an evening has simply just got boring. The financial climate not only got us assessing our spending habits but also wardrobes and classic ladylike pieces have been proven to last longer than any impractical garb we have lusted after in seasons gone by. It’s about letting the attraction be in the suggestion. And you can’t really argue with that.
